Inspector
Cooper is on the trail of fraudster, Rex King, when his quarry apparently
commits suicide. Did he really do so, if so, why is the landlady –
the last person to speak to him, suddenly killed?
During the long, hot dry summer of 1976, Beckton Mere drops to the lowest
level ever recorded, revealing a large wooden crate caught on a ledge several
feet down. The contents of the crate soon arouse Inspector Cooper’s
suspicions… Who put the crate there, and why are there so many animal
remains in the Mere?
The romance that comes to Cooper’s new assistant, Joshua Allsopp,
in the shape of Alicia Smith seems doomed to end as Yesterday’s Wrongs
begin to come to light: their destinies seem to become entangled in old
hatreds and jealousies. Then Alicia vanishes. Is she another victim in the
long chain of events that seem to have begun in the jungles of wartime Burma?
